National Canal Museum

Experience hands-on history fun for all ages at the National Canal Museum. Rides on the 48-ton, mule-drawn canal boat, Josiah White II, allow school, scout, homeschool, and camp groups to explore the history of the Lehigh Canal. The canal boat cruise takes groups through the waters of the canal’s old Section 8 in Hugh Moore Park. Trained crewmembers in period dress will narrate your excursion, focusing on the story of the anthracite canal. In the exhibits, which are located in the Elaine and Peter Emrick Technology Center, groups will see an exquisite collection of scale model canal boats, informative displays, and other items detailing the canal building process. Other attractions include the Locktenders House and D&L Trail. Boat charters, bike rentals, and more are also available.

Boat Excursion Lesson Plan

FUN FACTS

Did you know a boat can be built out of concrete and it will still float? As long as the boat is lighter than the water it displaces, it will stay above water. And what makes a boat move through the water? Throughout history, boats have been powered by wind, propellers, oars, motors, paddles, and ocean and river currents. Sailboats, which have been around for 5,000 years, can reach speeds of over 47 knots (about 54 mph) from wind power alone!
