Apple Hill Orchard & Cider Mill

Learn about the process of apple cidering with your school, scout, or homeschool group on a field trip to Apple Hill Orchard & Cider Mill. Located in the South Mountain range on the western side of North Carolina, the orchard has over 110 years of experience in growing delicious apples. Owned and operated by the Prewitt family for five generations, the orchard produces many apple varieties, including but not limited to Honeycrisp, Gala, Red Delicious, and Granny Smith. In addition to a cider mill, the orchard is home to a country store, bakery, and more. From August-October, groups of all ages can take an educational tour of the orchard and cider mill, and also visit for apple picking fun.

Cidering Lesson Plan

The cider press was a common household appliance, similar to the way a toaster or blender are today. Cider was even a common form of payment for work at one point in time. Farm workers could make 4 pints of cider a day. It was also used to pay rent and taxes.
