African Burial Ground National Monument

From the 1690s until 1794, free and enslaved Africans were buried in this area in Lower Manhattan, outside of what was New Amsterdam. Learn about this important archaeological find and how the use of the burial ground contributed to development of the city. Groups can examine replica artifacts and learn about the history of the burial ground in four exhibit areas, covering burial practices, the archaeological excavation, and the African diaspora in New York.
