Students can step into the past by learning about objects at Winterthur, from personal household items to textiles, furniture, and art. They can also wander through the gardens, or role-play in a story. Programs for middle- and high school-level learners focus on using objects as primary sources, and the roles of museum professionals. Students can learn about art conservation, and the science behind the aging and preservation of art; or examine the importance of Winterthur’s period rooms and setting in its presentation of historical exhibits.

Founder Henry Francis du Pont opened this estate to the public almost 60 years ago as a repository for American decorative arts. Tours of the house and its collection of nearly 90,000 objects, including furniture, ceramics, textiles, glass, and paintings explore American workmanship and style between the 17th and 19th centuries. Its library has become a recognized research center for American decorative arts, with more than 100,000 volumes; including many rare books and catalogs documenting American and European trades and material culture. Winterthur’s colorful gardens encompass blooming plants, pools and architecture, and the Enchanted Woods children’s garden.

– Vincent Van Gogh created over 2,000 works during his lifetime. However, he was only ever able to sell one of his paintings while he was alive.

– Leonardo Da Vinci was left-handed. He took notes from right-to-left instead of the English language standard left-to-right.

– Pablo Picasso was arrested and questioned regarding the theft of Mona Lisa in 1911. He was released without being charged.

Homeschool

Homeschool groups can enjoy a guided tour of Winterthur as they explore its gardens and grounds, history, and exhibitions. Tours focus on both fine art and utilitarian objects from the 18th-19th century, as well as the house’s furnished period rooms. Homeschool groups of 15 students or more can reserve one of the Museum’s hands-on school programs or outreach programs.
