ABOUT
The Hospital Gardens at UPenn
The Hospital Gardens at UPenn contain plants and herbs that were used for medicines during the 18th century, and the original plants are on display for curious visitors. The gardens are open to the public year-round and teeming with wisteria, azaleas and lots of local and national history. A centuries-old statue of William Penn and a cornerstone featuring text drafted by Benjamin Franklin augment an elegant system of gardens surrounding the hospital’s Pine Building, itself a National Registered Landmark. However, the true highlight is a more recent project: the Physic Garden, planted in 1976 but based on plans dating back to 1774!
