ABOUT

Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden

With its 28 buildings and 14 botanical gardens, Snug Harbor is known as a place where history, architecture, agriculture, art, and education come together. Groups are welcome to participate in Snug Harbor’s many tour and workshop options, including tours of the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden, the wetlands, the pastoral grounds and gardens, and the Snug Harbor Heritage Farm. Each tour may be accompanied with a hands-on workshop, where groups can learn the art of calligraphy, consider how cultural values are expressed through architecture, or hunt the grounds to find signs of weathering, among other activities.

FUN FACTS

The diverse world of plants is perhaps the weirdest, and most fascinating, of all living things. Bamboo can grow over three feet in one day (you can literally watch it grow). There are 600 species of carnivorous plants, which trap and digest insects, frogs, or small birds (if a vegetarian eats this plant, are they still a vegetarian?). The world’s largest flower, Rafflesia, can grow up to three feet in diameter (how big would a bouquet be…). Do a little digging on your next trip to a botanical garden (not literally!), and see what interesting plant facts you can find.
