Programs might also involve hiking, playing games, or making a nature craft. Pettit Environmental Preserve

A 70-acre nature preserve encompassing forest and lake ecosystems, the Pettit Environmental Preserve serves as a diverse habitat for Georgia’s native wildlife. The preserve has several trails, a stone amphitheater, tree identification markers, a floating bridge, and two pavilion education areas. Groups can enjoy hands-on, curriculum aligned outdoor programs for PreK-12th.

A new education building will allow groups of up to 100 students and include indoor educational exhibits and animal displays.

FIELD TRIPS

Scouts visiting the Pettit Preserve can learn valuable outdoor skills, as well as the “Leave No Trace” principle.

Cub Scouts will hike one of the trails, identify animals and insects, and complete a rank-appropriate activity; Tiger Cubs compare vermi-composting to other methods in “How Do We Affect Our Environment” or how to spot animal signs in “Let’s Go Outdoors;" Wolf Cubs can choose to about bird identification in "Birds of a Feather" or composting & recycling in “Your Living World;" Bear Cubs learn about soil, leaves and seeds and make a water scope in “Break Down, Build Up” or focus on native species in “Share the World with Wildlife;" Webelos learn to identify poisonous snakes and plants, and prepare a first aid kit.

Girl Scout badge programs include: The “Outdoor Adventurer” program in which Brownies create a nature journal and learn knot tying; “Eco Camper” where Juniors learn about camping equipment and trip preparation; and the “Outdoor Art Apprentice” program that allows Cadettes to create a fairy house and learn to observe nature.

FIELD TRIPS

Camp groups can visit the Preserve for age appropriate hiking, fun, and games. In “The Place We Live” campers ages 4-7 will learn about local habitats and native species and participate in a variety of crafts. Campers ages 8-12 learn about “The Wild Places Around Us” and use tree identification stations to learn about different trees and their importance to wildlife.
