Nature Exploration Lesson Plan
FUN FACTS
One single tree can provide the oxygen required for two human beings and over 8,000 sheets of paper. Trees can also clean the soil and air by absorbing harmful pollutants. So what have you done for a tree lately? Nature centers and state parks provide a hands-on environment to discover facts about native plants and animals, as well as ways to preserve these natural resources.

FIELD TRIPS
As youth outdoor education professionals, many of the OLC Directors and Instructors grew up in scouting organizations. With all the experience shared among the team, they have been able to create some amazing programs for Girl Scout encampments, Boy Scout troops, and a variety of other scouting organizations. With a full equestrian center, archery program, climbing tower, a lake, and farm and garden classes, the OLC offers a variety of badge-related activities. With the ability to choose rustic platform tents or cozy cabins, you can pick the accommodations that fit your group best.
For Girl Scouts specifically, they’ve gone a step further to become a program partner with the Nation’s Capital Area Girl Scouts and the Black Diamond Area Girl Scouts. The OLC frequently hosts encampments and is ready to support you through the planning process with schedule templates and activity descriptions. They even host their own “Girl Scout Weekend” each season where individual troops can come out for activities, community, and evening programs.

Ropes Course Lesson Plan
FUN FACTS
Did you know that the British Royal Marines use an advanced ropes course as training for their troops? The course builds confidence and tests troops’ ability to overcome both physical and emotional obstacles. The same ideas are used in recreational ropes courses, which aim to build teamwork and cooperation, as well as boost confidence and leadership skills in participants. While many ropes courses offer lessons aligned during each activity, it is also worthwhile to reflect on the experience after the course. Ask students to describe their feelings during each part of the activity, what challenges they faced, and what strategies they used to overcome those challenges. Ask how these examples can be applied to real-life situations.
