Maine State Aquarium
The Maine State Aquarium offers field trips for educational groups and can accommodate special needs and ESL visitors. A presentation of the lobsters, sharks and skates, or animal of your choice can be added to the trip. During the trip students can identify and observe animals; get up close and personal with the sharks and skates; discover Mollusks, Arthropods, and Echinoderms in the touch tank; and more. Teachers can use the aquarium activities provided in the field trip guide to keep the visit educational and focused. In addition to field trips, the Aquarium also offers classroom resources and classroom animal supplies.

At center stage sharks and skates circle, waiting to be patted by those who dare. At the touch tank visitors can feel the spiny skin of a sea star or sea urchin, get squirted by a sea cucumber or scallop, watch the moon snail pull in its enormous "gooey" foot, and be fascinated by the sea star retracting its stomach!

• Did you know a sea cucumber can shoot its intestines at predators, and then regrow them, in order to avoid being eaten?
• An electric eel can produce 500 watts of electricity (that’s enough to light up 10 light bulbs) to frighten away predators.
• Dolphins sleep with one half of the brain and one eye open to watch for danger.
• No matter how many pieces you cut a sea sponge into each piece will continue living and growing.
• Ocean life can do amazing things to survive. As you visit an aquarium with your students, note the different ways animals defend themselves. Just like a squid, people wouldn’t bother you either if you squirted black ink in their face!
