DESTINATIONS

FIELD TRIPS

The Indian River Queen is now offering historic and science scenic morning cruises. This cruise features onboard audio commentary that tells stories about the quaint history of the first settlers who arrived in the City of Cocoa in 1860 and how this small community became Florida’s Space Coast. Students will also learn about the Indian River Lagoon, North America’s most diverse estuary, with more than 2100 species of plants and 2200 animals. The Indian River Lagoon is home to herds of manatees, flocks of birds and playful dolphins which passengers may observe during their adventure.

Following the historic cruise teachers can plan a picnic lunch in Cocoa Village where students can enjoy the playground and splash pad. We also recommend a walking tour to see some of the historic sites in Cocoa Village if time permits. All passengers will receive the Queen's trivia question card upon boarding. Answers to the trivia game will be provided on the Queen's website following the cruise. This is a fun way to ensure that students learn fun facts about the history, the boat and the Indian River Lagoon.

Boat Excursion Lesson Plan

FUN FACTS

Did you know a boat can be built out of concrete and it will still float? As long as the boat is lighter than the water it displaces, it will stay above water. And what makes a boat move through the water? Throughout history, boats have been powered by wind, propellers, oars, motors, paddles, and ocean and river currents. Sailboats, which have been around for 5,000 years, can reach speeds of over 47 knots (about 54 mph) from wind power alone!
