Students can explore various aspects of history while perusing the Museums of Historic Palmyra. At the Palmyra Historical Museum, students will learn about slavery, the Civil War era, women’s history, and famous figures of Palmyra such as Joseph Smith, General John Swift, and Sir Winston Churchill’s family. In the Alling Coverlet Museum, named after coverlet collector Merle Alling of Rochester, students will see an intricate collection of 19th-century handwoven coverlets, quilts, and more. The Phelps General Store allows students to see a visual representation of the retail industry of the Victorian and Civil War eras. A stop at the Print Shop Museum, which is complete with printing equipment of the 1800s, gives students a look at the printing industry in Palmyra. Students will love visiting the Erie Canal Depot, where they can pretend to be passengers on the 1821 boat Myron Holley.

A former hotel and tavern, Palmyra Historical Museum features 23 themed rooms that reveal the history of the town of Palmyra, New York. Palmyra was a stop on the Underground Railroad for freedom seekers that were on their way to Canada, which is detailed in maps, artifacts, and research materials at the museum. Permanent exhibits at the museum contain photographs, toys, dolls, and much more. The museum is part of the Museums of Historic Palmyra, which also include the Alling Coverlet Museum, Phelps General Store, the Print Shop Museum, and Erie Canal Depot. Group rates are available with advance reservations. Special events are hosted at Historic Palmyra’s sites throughout the year.

Scouts

Scout groups can work on various badges while learning about Palmyra’s history at the Museums of Historic Palmyra. Tours of the Palmyra Historical Museum will allow scouts to learn about local historic figures to begin working on American Heritage badges. Scouts can also work on American Business badges and learn about the Industrial Revolution while exploring Phelps General Store and the Print Shop. Scouts are welcome to tour all five museums with costumed interpreters such as the families of William Phelps and Winston Churchill during Heritage Weekend in June.

Camp

Summer camp groups will enjoy learning about Palmyra’s history at the Museums of Historic Palmyra. At the Palmyra Historical Museum, campers will see portraits of historical figures and view various artifacts. Be sure to also stop at the other museums on site to explore handwoven coverlets at the Alling Coverlet Museum, 19th-century retail in the Phelps General Store, antique printing equipment in the Print Shop Museum, and travel at the Erie Canal Depot. In the Palmyra Historical Museum, they’ll learn about slavery, the Civil War era, women’s history, and famous figures of Palmyra such as Joseph Smith, General John Swift, and Sir Winston Churchill’s family. Named after coverlet collector Merle Alling of Rochester, the Alling Coverlet Museum features a collection of 19th-century handwoven coverlets, spinning wheels, and more for homeschoolers to see. A tour of the Phelps General Store allows homeschoolers understand what the retail industry was like during the Victorian and Civil War eras. The Print Shop Museum, which is displays printing equipment from the 1800s, gives homeschoolers a look at the printing industry in Palmyra.
