Natick Community Organic Farm

Natick Community Organic Farm is a nonprofit, certified-organic farm that provides hands-on, experiential education for all ages, year-round. Our programs are aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and offer students the opportunity to observe and participate in activities integral to producing healthy food on a working farm. Our programs bring classroom subjects such as animal and plant science, maple sugaring, and geology to life, utilizing the farm as an exciting laboratory for cultivating an appreciation and understanding of the larger ecological community of which we are all a part.

School

School programs bring science to life through exciting farm activities and exploration. Students might explore the woodlands, test water and soil, search for signs of erosion, learn about chickens, spin sheep’s wool, and more. Other agricultural topics include harvesting and gardening, maple sugaring, baby livestock, and greenhouses. Our “work-study day” lets middle and high school students visit for 3-5 hours, engaging with farm work while exploring topics together; faculty are expected to plan a lesson they would teach as part of student rotations on the farm.

FUN FACTS

The average American may eat 125 pounds of potatoes each year, but corn is actually America’s number one field crop, providing ingredients for cereals, peanut butter, snack foods and soft drinks. The average person eats 68 quarts of popcorn a year alone! Use a trip to an agricultural farm to find out where our fruits and vegetables come from. Compare organic, pesticide-free, and genetically engineered crops. Research the products made possible by crops grown in the U.S. (shampoos, crayons, and baseball bats all come from agricultural products, for example). Ask your local farm about the benefits of eating local or growing your own garden.

Scouts

A variety of programs for Boy and Girl Scouts are available. They can tour the farm, meet farm animals, help with chores, and much more. Three seasonal programs are offered as well – holiday crafts, sheep shearing, and a maple sugaring tour. Badge programs are also available in topics such as farming, ecology, plants, insects, forest history, and compost. The Farm also welcomes scout groups for overnight camping!
