School

Trained Yale student docents and educators will lead your students on guided, themed tours. Choose from a variety of tour themes that will allow students to explore photography, culture, decorative art, and more. Each tour will explore up to three collections. Students will also have the opportunity to access the Nolen Center Library. Field trips align with Connecticut State Learning Standards. College classes are welcome to hold sessions at the gallery.

Yale University Art Gallery

The gallery’s exhibits showcase dynamic art ranging from Leonardo da Vinci’s early works created during his time as an apprentice in Verrocchio’s studio to intricate wooden masks of West Africa. Also on view is a dynamic permanent collection, which includes ancient and modern Western art as well as African and Asian works. Other collections at the Yale University Art Gallery include coins, photographs, drawings, and rare examples of American decorative arts. Groups will find new ways to look at art closely and think critically about works on display. Guided visits for students, scouts, homeschoolers, and camp groups are available Tuesday-Friday from November to August. Reservation requests are filled based on availability.

– Vincent Van Gogh created over 2,000 works during his lifetime. However, he was only ever able to sell one of his paintings while he was alive.

– Leonardo Da Vinci was left-handed. He took notes from right-to-left instead of the English language standard left-to-right.

– Pablo Picasso was arrested and questioned regarding the theft of Mona Lisa in 1911. He was released without being charged.

– In late 1961, Henri Matisse’s painting “Le Bateau” was hung upside down at the Museum of Modern Art in New York for 46 days before anyone noticed.

Scouts

Scout groups can work on Art, Architecture, and history-related badges on field trips to the Yale University Art Gallery. Guided tours allow scouts to explore visual elements in art, historical periods and cultures, and the visual ways in which artists tell stories. Each tour will explore up to three collections in the museum. Examples of subjects covered by these tour includes gesture and facial expression, narrative storytelling, techniques in painting, and even the design of the museum building.

Large homeschool groups will gain critical thinking and observation skills, and learn how to evaluate art through close examination and discussion. They may also participate in descriptive writing and drawing activities in addition to docent-led guided tours.
